Spirit, Queen Bees
costumes – headdresses, palm leaves, and bamboo; digital photography series photographic collaboration: Nur Khamdan, 2024
Artist residency at Jatiwangi Art Factory in Indonesia (Java, Kuningan), in collaboration with Roem Institut in Kuningan.
During the artist residency program on the island of Java, I prepared a series of photographs featuring the Spirit/Queen Bee character. The idea is rooted in the local tradition of beekeeping, respect for biodiversity, and a spiritual approach to nature. In collaboration with local craftsmen, I designed and made two experimental costumes. The unconventional face coverings (inspired by beekeepers' headgear) were made of natural materials - coconut palm leaves.
The photos were taken in areas of natural and/or geological value – in the vicinity of the city of Kuningan.
The residency was co-financed by the “Polish Culture in the World” program, organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the culture.pl portal, and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
