Flat Earth. Death Trip
series of 15 drawings, various techniques, including original technique and collage on paper, A3, 2018/2019
Flat Earth. Death Trip Flat Earth. Death Trip is a series of drawings exploring the interdependencies between ancient cosmologies, mythological notions of travel and death, and contemporary ways of living in a world whose boundaries of knowledge and experience are constantly being negotiated. The works are based on research in museum collections, including the National Museum in Jakarta, and a dialogue with the iconography and narratives of ancient visual and symbolic systems.
The conceptual axis of the series is a reinterpretation of the „Single Letter Signals”maritime communication system - an archaic method of conveying meaning using flags. The selection and shape of the sentences resulting from this system do not so much illustrate as reconfigure archetypal narratives about travel, borders, death, and transformation, juxtaposing them with the formal language of drawing.
The series is part of broader contemporary art practices in which graphics and drawing function as a research medium (visual thinking/research drawing) - a tool for processing cultural, mythological, and cosmological knowledge. The works not only refer to historical visual gestures, but also reconfigure them, creating new relationships between image and text, between anthropological archive and personal perceptual experience.
