BIOGRAPHY

 

Marta Weglinska (b. 1990 in the Lublin region, Poland) is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is grounded in research on the natural environment. Her work explores the relationships between humans, landscape, and the more-than-human environment. She combines field observation, archival and bibliographic research with artistic practice, addressing ecological processes, geological formations, and cultural ways of understanding the natural world. She works across painting, drawing, photography, cyanotype, performance, film, and object-making.

 

Her long-term work focuses on diverse ecosystems in Poland and Indonesia, examining the relationships between environmental processes, embodied perception, mythology, and cultural practices. She holds a BA in Painting (2014) and an MA in Intermedia (2016) from the University of the Arts Poznań. In 2016–2017, she studied at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta (Institut Seni Indonesia) as part of the Indonesian government’s Darmasiswa scholarship programme.

 

Alongside her artistic practice, she co-founded and co-ran Silverado Gallery (2013–2017), which presented collective and site-specific art projects, and founded Kobalt Migrating Platform (2018), where she develops art and education programmes. Her experience includes site-specific projects, collaboration with artists and institutions, and creating activities that engage audiences and local communities, including workshops, participatory projects, and public engagement initiatives.

 

ARTIST STATEMENT

 

My artistic practice is based on field research and inquiry conducted in direct contact with the natural environment. I work through traveling, long-term observation, and careful experience of the landscape. I treat art as an open, transdisciplinary process rooted in natural space. Nature—understood as a dynamic system of relationships, processes, and forms of life—is the starting point and main area of my research and artistic practice.

 

I observe the natural environment from many perspectives: biology, geology, ecology, religion, mythology, tradition, philosophy, and culture. I combine the knowledge gained through bibliographic and archival research and work with museum materials with intuitive, physical, and multisensory experience of the terrain. I am interested in how artistic practice can function as a tool for ecological awareness - revealing the interdependencies between humans, landscape, and non-human forms of life.

 

A significant part of my practice involves field research in protected and environmentally valuable areas (including forest ecosystems, wetlands, mountain and karst landscapes). Selected locations become the subjects of paintings, photographs, drawings, objects, and installations. 

 

I am fascinated by the relationship between the microcosm and the macrocosm, the cycle of matter, geomorphological processes, and ancient ways of perceiving the world, in which nature was treated as a causative entity that co-created reality. I am inspired by mythologies, traditions, rituals, and the achievements of ancient civilizations and cultures (especially prehistoric and ancient ones).

 

My creative practice is situated at the intersection of contemporary art, artistic research, and environmental humanities, drawing on posthumanist and relational ways of thinking about the world. I work in many media, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, experimental film, and artist's books, treating art as a space for mindful dialogue with nature and a tool for building alternative environmental narratives.

Silverado Gallery was an independent art initiative co-founded and co-run by Marta Węglińska between 2013 and 2017. Initially operating from its own exhibition space, the initiative later developed most of its projects outside its home venue, often at the invitation of cultural institutions, event organisers, and independent art initiatives. Each project was developed in response to a specific space, place, and its context, often in collaboration with invited artists.

 

Silverado’s projects were presented at independent art fairs and art events in Poland and abroad. In Stockholm, the initiative collaborated with the Polish Institute in Stockholm, producing an exhibition as part of Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair. Silverado also participated in Alt_Cph in Copenhagen.

 

The gallery’s activities encompassed the production and presentation of site-specific projects, collaborative work, and cooperation with institutions and organisers of art events.

Kobalt Migrating Platform is an initiative founded by Marta Węglińska and Patrycja Plich in 2018, combining art, education, and participatory practices. The platform develops workshop-based, artistic, and cultural programmes for diverse audiences, collaborating with cultural institutions, organisations, and other partners. Kobalt’s activities include creative workshops, educational and cultural programmes, and projects developed in collaboration with local communities, in which participants actively contribute to the process and its outcomes.
